"In Chapter 9, Duttweiler gives nine characteristics of an effective school (pg. 196 & 197). From this list, reflect on the school you are currently employed and select 4 of the nine that either embody your school or are the antithesis of it. Explain your choice."
In the school I am currently employed it is easy to see at least 4 subcategories of Dutteiler's characteristics of effective schools that are evident. My school is very student centered with SCA and other programs. Students are our main priority when dealing with selecting key events for whole school programs. We offer academically rich programs that support a well-rounded academic program. There are many options that support students appropriately that allow feedback. This is conducted by both teachers and volunteers. Our school "gets it." The school climate is such that all support our main goal, and that is for all student success. Our "open door" policy allows a friendly environment for community reps to work in. Plus, we have an ongoing staff development program. This ranges from Technology Tuesday to mulitple opportunities for out of the school inservices on CWTs. This may be one of many reasons why our school scores are top notch.
The school that I have been in for the past 9 years definitely shows characteristics from this chapter. I think it show student centered because everything that happens is for the students. We all have a buddy in the school that we make contact with to show we care. It has academically rich programs. We team teach and read a new research book each summer and report back to help everyone have buy in. Our SOL scores show how hard we work. I think this goes right along with providing instruction that promotes student learning. We do all we can to make ALL students successful. We know that all students can learn. This also falls right into fostering collegial interaction. All grade levels meet once a week including the special ed teachers so we all are working together. Each grade level gives the resource teachers a monthly bulletin on what we are teaching so they can hit on the topic also.
My school is very student centered. Students are very involved with all aspects of our school. The SCA leads many fundraisers and activities. Each year, the student body participates in the St. Jude's Mathathon and raises money for the hospital. We have many volunteers who are very involved with art, library, music, Field Day, parent readers, etc. I think we also offer academically rich programs. We are constantly working to improve our academic program; we are totally revamping our Language Arts program in grades 3rd-5th to support all learners. We promote student learning as well. Students know what is expected of them and work to meet those expectations. We work with our special education teachers to ensure we are all on the same page. We offer classes in our afterschool program for topics like Art, Foreign Languages, Sports, Dance, etc. Our librarian has a book club for grades 3-5. To be an effective school, you must have parental and community involvement. Our parents support us so much--financially, through the PTA, volunteering at the school, and so on. We feel very lukcy to have such a strong and supportive PTA. We could not run our school and programs effectively without the help from the parents and community members.
In my school, I see the following characteristics that embody my school:
1. Academic Enrichment - We have a 21st Century afterschool -program that offers extensive academic enrichment. 2. Student Centered - For the most part, teachers and staff make decisions based on helping students 3. Positive school climate - Everyone feels good about working there and is proud of their school. 4. Involvement of parents and community - school has multiple programs and events that involve both.

In my school I believe that these 4 subcategories apply. We are student centered, our curriculum is geared to meet each student where ever he/or she is. this also help promote student learning, due to the nature of our population we tend to have alot of collegial interaction, but a positive school climate is one of the things that is really a challenge for us, again because of our population.
Several of these characteristics apply to the school where I work. We are definitely student centered. I think I would find it difficult to work at school that was not completely focused on the students and their needs. We have a positive school climate which is felt by everyone since students, parents and fauclty have all helped to create it. There is a team effort and it shows. The fostering of collegial interaction is evident in the grade level meetings that are held every week. Teachers are creative and innovative and work together on many projects. Parent and community involvement is such a plus. It strengthens our school climate. There are always parents in the building volunteering in some way. Every Wednesday, we have moms who come in and work in the cafeteria on preparing any project that the teachers need some help with. Our PTA is very active. We had over 100% participation this year. They organize and run the students participation in The Fincastle 5K, fundraisers, the Fall Carnival, etc.
Effective schools have a positive school climate- Most of the staff at my school feel lucky to work there, and most of the students are happy with the school. We have a minimum number of fights and discipline problems compared to other schools I have worked in. Effective schools involve parents and the community - We have a very involved PTSO parent group that does many things for teacher appreciation, puts on an outstanding after-prom event, and sponsors an art contest. We also have a very involved booster club and band parents that are constantly in and out of the school helping with different events. Effective schools offer academically rich programs I think we have strong programs that run the gamut from self-contained special education to AP courses. Students identified as special education often have co-taught classes and directed study periods, while other students attend an off-site engineering program or the governor's school for part of the school day. Effective schools are student centered - Communication about students, their progress or lack of it, counseling for them, and programs to make the school an appealing place to be are all part of how our school keeps the focus on the students. The following charteristics embody my school. 1. The school is student centered - Or school takes great steps to ensure that all students feel important. Our administrators and teachers put our students first. 2. My school fosters collegial interaction. - Teachers at the school often work together as a whole staff or by department in making decisions. We develop pacing guides, work on the school improvement plan, and do various activities together. Most of the teachers get along very well and understand the sense of community at the school. 3. Extensive Staff Development - Our school and school system works hard to provide us with effective staff development activities that will help us in the classroom. 4. Involving Parents and the Community - We have a very active PTA and Booster Clubs for our extracurricular activities.
The following characteristics really stand out at my school: 1. Effective Schools Provide Instruction That Promotes School Learning. We have many programs in place - for example our Remediation and Recovery program to our Extra-Help Program - that provide students with additional help and support to ensure their success. 2. Effective Schools Foster Collegial Interaction: We often do cross - curricular lesson plans together, and since teachers are the ones who register the students in their homerooms, we all must know about each others' subject matter, prerequisites, etc., which gives all of us a greater appreciation and respect for what other teachers do. 3. Effective Schools Involve Parents and the Community - this is a major push at our school, from working through the PTA to our one-day registration where95% of our parents show up on one day to register their children. 4. Effective Schools Offer Academically Rich Programs- We are a Commonwealth Scholars Site; we have JROTC, many AP and DC classes and provide many co-taught classes (spec. ed. teacher and reg. ed. teacher working together) to ensure that all students have a variety of options to choose from.
My school is extremely student centered, we have special "clubs" set up to help students learn as well as be sociable. I think we have a positive school climate, we have amazing teachers, and a strong connection to community members. Parents and community memebers are constantly involved with and in the school. Parent volunteers are there everyday sometimes. Across the board, my school has a young faculty. I think we all have the mindset that we don't know everything and we are all willing to others that are doing something well and try to learn from them. If you happen to be the one doing something that others like all of our teachers are willing to help out other teachers.
