In your current position, which leadership style does your administrator or supervisor use? Is s/he an Artist, Craftsman, or Technocrat? What makes you believe that?
Boy...I feel that my administrator is a little of all three. But her great strengths fall in management. She is a policy person and she can effectively lead/bring together a mix of all different teaching styles to make our school work. She is a craftmen. Being that there is not an AP, her responsibility is unbelievable. She has to be on top of her game day in and day out. She knows what type of "design" she wants and carefully puts it through.
My principal is mostly an artist. He is always looking for ways for us to be the best school we can be. He is also a great salesman for our school; he says it's because he used to be a marketing teacher. We even have our own race car that we sponsor - has our school's name right there on the side!(There are mixed feelings about that idea!). He enjoys the "planning" more than the "doing" and is very good at delegating.
I have to agree with Jim. We have the same administrator. I think she is more of a Technocrat. She is definitely a rule follower and has a rule for every decision that she makes. She is not much of a people person, however, she does bring out the best in some of the teachers.
My principal is mostly a technocrat. She fits the book definition to a tee. She is very meticulous and detail-oriented. She will send out an email correcting other people's grammatical errors in their email or have a memo recopied if errors were found in it. She has a difficult time managing people. She has a hard time saying anything remotely negative to any member of the staff.
This is a tough one. I have to agree with some of the others and say that my administrator is a combination. If I had to choose one, I would say he is more of an artist. He is always coming up with new strategies for us to use in the classroom, new resources that we can use to be more effective and new ways to best promote our school and the wonderful things he feels that we accomplish there.
I consider the principal I was supervised by for the last two school years to be a craftsman (woman). "Craftsmen view leadership as design that transfers ideas into things." "Craftsmen know how to turn visions into reality, to take big ideas and make them understandable and useful, and to bring together the right mix of human resources to make them work." I see my principal doing and talking in hands-on and informal situations most of the time. She is busy making things work, making changes where necessary, and doing things that have clear reasons behind them. I think a love of her job (craft) motivates her as much as the principles and vision behind her actions. One thing she feels strongly about is supporting the athletes in our school, and she often does that with a minimum of instructional interruption. For example, we will sometimes have our classes step out into the hall for five minutes to cheer a team that is leaving for a playoff game, rather than having a full pep rally. Also, buses are often organized by the principal and athletic director to take students (fans) to championship games out of town, mostly on weekends. Richard Moon
My adminstrator is an artist, he is one that has alot of high ideals and tends to transfer those ideals into goals. He had the idea that changing the school culture would translate into an overall lifting of the school in every area, this created a series of goals for the faculty and staff that proved to be challenging but in many ways effective.
The style that fits my current principal is that of an artist. As an artist he works hard to motivate students and teachers. He takes a lot of pride in our school and works hard in the community to advertise the good things that taking place at our school.
My principal is an Artist! He has huge visions and really can motivate and work toward those goals. He is never content to stay in one place, he is always working toward the next thing that will make our school even better.

JONATHAN PAIT'S BLOG,
I would call my administrator a craftman. He likes to combine his own experiences with research-based theory and strategy to go about his job
