Rather than a future administrator, I am now a current administrator, with a whopping 3 days of experience under my belt. As an instructional coordinator for art, I do not have a school of my own to create a culture in, and this limits my ability to use the cultural force. I would like to think the cultural force will be the "style" that suits me best as a principal in the future. However, as an art coordinator, I think the symbolic force will be my most powerful tool. Focusing attention on the important issues, modeling important goals and behaviors, and visiting classrooms to visibly spend time with teachers and students, and downplaying management concerns in favor of educational concerns. Reminding art teachers that what they are doing is important, and why it is important, providing "purposing", and refocusing them on clear instructional goals. Focusing also on the reputation, pride, and community visibility of our programs would put me in the realm of using the cultural force as well. Richard Moon
The style that best fits me is a combination between the human force and the cultural force. I would like to be an administrator who consistently provides support and encouragement to teachers and students while ensuring everyone feels valued and important to our school community. I would really like to create a community bond within the school among parents, teachers, staff, and students. This type of community was evident at my previous school and we were much more successful when working towards a common goal.
I think I would rely on the human force. I have always been someone that likes to sit down and talk with people, find out all the things about them, and have great in depth discussions. I think I could use this personability as an administator to connect with and relate to parents and faculty.
I too think that I am a combination of the human force and the cultural force. I am definitely a people person and love to interact with everyone. I am also into the community aspect. I am leaving a school that is in a small community and community was an important part of what our school was about. I hope that as I travel to the five schools each week that I will observe many different leadership styles and that this will help as I look to the type of school leader that I would like to be.
I agree with the human and cultural forces being suitable for me just as a couple of others have responded. I think that everyone, students, teachers, staff, parents, and the community, should feel valued and a part of the school in order for the school to be at its best. Making people feel a part of something special ensures that they will give their all! I am very structured and orgainized so I feel that the technical force will be something that I will have to downplay and focus more of my attention on the human and cultural forces!
The style most suited to me would probably be the educational force. In an ideal world where there weren't fifty million other things to do, I would enjoy and derive great satisfaction from helping teachers become better teachers - by getting into the curriculum, offering strategies workshops, observing teachers often, and just being able to sit down with teachers and talk about what they need to help students be more successful in the classroom. In this day of NCLB and SOLs, I think teachers would appreciate and benefit from the extra assistance.
When looking at myself, I would agree with Kim. I am not just one, but a combination of human and cultural force. I too enjoy the interaction with people and discussing face to face issues. I believe this will help in administration to connect with teacher within the building. Most importantly, working at a small school, I enjoy how the communtiy involved in daily activities.
While I can see a few of the forces within my style, I feel the symbolic force would best desribe me. Modeling is very important to me. Principals have a lot of power within their school community. As a leader, I feel it is very important for people to know who you are and what you stand for.
I would hope to be a symbolic force to my staff, although I know that this takes time and experience to develop. I do not want to be the type of administrator that has to impose my authority, or barter to get things done. I would like to be able to convince my staff that what they do is important, so they can do it because it is the right thing to do.
I think that cultural forces best represents me. I feel that the use of human and technical forces are already ingrained in the use of cultural forces. This style of leadership is an extremly power tool. Being able to change and adapt the cultural forces in a school would have a profound effect on faculty, students and community.
